Pentax W90
Quote from grover on November 13, 2024, 6:55 pmAs I occasionally do I stumbled on a cheap point and shoot at the local thrift store. This time, a Pentax W90 for $5, a 2010 era waterproof 12mp point and shoot. I buy these thing hoping to be pleasantly surprised. A diamond in the rough?
The build is very solid. Better than the other dozen or so thrift store point and shoots I've bought. It has a cool macro mode with a built in ring light that shoots down to 1cm!
The image quality is ..... abysmal but par for the course. It's no better and no worse than any other compact point and shoot of the same age.
Unlike every other $5 camera I've bought, I think I might use this on more than one occasion. Certainly not for the photo quality but because it's built well, has a neat macro mode, and I actually trust it to be waterproof to 6 meters (I've only had it in a sink full of water so far).
Anyway, these are the first photos taken while on my morning dog walk. Don't pixel peep, you will be sorely disappointed. It didn't help that I was shooting in dim early morning light.

Quote from James Warner on November 20, 2024, 2:06 pmThat's been my (admittedly limited) experience with these all-in-one water proof cameras. It's interesting how mushy the images got. I pixel peeped 🤣 The EXIF says ISO 80? I thought maybe with the early morning light high ISO might be part of that mushiness, but doesn't seem so.
Anyway, for $5 that's an awesome find. I love these cameras for my kids too, who don't care about IQ of course and love to chuck their cameras everywhere anyway.Â
That macro mode turned out pretty nice!

FWIW, The Olympus TG series image quality (well, the TG-4/5/6/7, not sure about the multiple-digit cameras) is surprisingly good for these kind of cameras. You can often find the older ones for somewhat reasonable prices (not $5 prices...).
I own a TG-4 that I sometimes take on hikes / bad weather / kayak trips. It is far from perfect, but the image quality is actually decent. They also support RAW which is helpful.
The W90 is a good looking, tiny camera. For such a cheap find, that's great.Â

Yup, SOFT is the word. I was shooting auto ISO with a setting of 80-800. I don't thinks this camera knows what it's doing lol.
And yes, I hand it out to my kids. It's good for that. This thing handles abuse well.
I spent a little more time fiddling with the settings and I think it has helped a bit. Exposure compensation to -1ev, increase contrast +1, "Natural" image tone, and "quality level" set to 3 stars. Additionally if I put it to black and white mode things start to look pretty decent.
I'm determined to take this turd and produce something that makes someone say " you got that image from that camera?! " ... it'll take some work/time. I'll just chuck it in my pocket for a while until it happens. I'll have to use noise to my advantage 😉 This is kinda the fun with these cheap cameras.

RAW would be a very nice step up. The TG-4 is probably another level for sure. If the W90 has shown me anything, it's that I would appreciate a camera of this size and build but with better image quality and RAW. I'll have to keep an eye on the TGs. Sounds like they would fit the bill.
