Kodak Crazy - the Easyshare C875

PreviousPage 2 of 2

the dx6490 was my first camera with manual controls.  it was cheap enough for my budget at the time and the 10x optical zoom was enticing.

Well John, this thread pushed me to finish my Kodak video so look out for that soon! It should be a really fun one. This one is general about Kodak and shows some cool cameras I picked up, and I'll probably makes some videos dedicated to just one Kodak camera in the future too. Cool stuff. 🙂

Happy snappin' 🙂

I've just been reading about the work of Bryce Bayer while he was working as a research scientist at Kodak. Without his colour array, digital photography may have turned out very differently.

I shall look forward to your video, James.

It's about time Kodak got some love.

So I stumbled on a Kodak Easyshare C195 for a couple bucks at a local thrift store and I remembered this thread.

This particular model uses a 14 megapixel CCD sensor.

I put two AA batteries in it this morning and brought it along for a walk. It was early morning and a bit dark so it struggled to focus, but when it does it actually performs surprisingly well!

I'm not likely to shoot any wall hangers with it. The 2mb(ish) files fall down when you blow them up at-all.. but for sharing photos online with that CCD look I think it's pretty good. It's also tiny!

Recently found my old mid-2000s V705, got it a new battery, unfortunately, when I start it - it displays error 45 which according to the internet means either a bad SD card (not the case) or the lens are not aligned.

The internet, remembers the v705, and offered helpful advice like "whack it on a flat surface as you turn it on, so the lens align". That does not sound too great, but I tried it, to no avail, I am either very bad at whacking or the camera's "lens alignment" is so bad that a pretty decent whack is not good enough anymore.

I am not motivated enough to try and open it and play with it more, so I am afraid that this camera might be relegated to the display pile, as much as I wanted to see if it is any good in 2024.

You can try drop it onto a rug or towel (to prevent scratches and bouncing). Drop from very low and increase slowly.
Double the height is roughly double the "whack". Ofc if you go too high its just like dropping the cam and its just going to damage it.
The rule of thumb or rather rule of toe is that if you would not want you toe under it its probably too high😄

Believe it or not, I actually tried it in the carpeted office for a little while and once I got to chest high, for one glorious instance, the camera worked. Of course, the next time it started the error returns - which obviously makes it a bit unusable in the real world.

I can just imagine that scene where I want to shoot street, for example, where I unfold a towel, set it on the ground and perform a series of drops of that 2006 camera until it is willing to play ball... 😉

Excuse me sir, can you please keep that pose with the cigarette's smoke blowing against the fog for a second while I start my camera?

Since I could not make my old V705 work, but I did get a battery for it, it seemed like a reasonable idea to go find another camera that takes the same battery because, well, GAS. It helps that these little Kodaks do not have much clout, so you can find them rather cheap.

I got me a little V550, 5MP, single lens (unlike the V705), went around with it, really enjoyed it. It is so small that it is, for all practical purposes, an ergonomic disaster, but if it comes to having fun shooting, it worked well for me.

I like the results.
