Going back to CCD / Olympus E-500
Quote from itwasfaith on June 25, 2022, 7:12 pmLast year or so I decided to upgrade from my old CCD Olympus SP-500UZ bridge camera to an Olympus E-420 and was slightly underwhelmed by the colours of the SOOC jpegs, after hearing how nice the Kodak CCD colours were I decided to look into getting an E-300 though later decided on the E-500 for it's more standard body
I managed to get this whole kit for around £200, this is what was included:
- Olympus E-500 with original battery
- New replacement battery with charger
- 2 CF Cards (4GB and 2GB)
- 512MB xD Card
- Zuiko Digital 40-150mm ƒ/4-5.6 with hood
- Zuiko Digital 14-45mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 with hood
- Zuiko Digital 17.5-45 ƒ/3.5-5.6
- 58mm UV filter
- Olympus-branded lens bag (for the telephoto)
Haven't been able to test it much but the photos its already produced are amazing though you'll have be careful using ISOs over 400
(Both taken with the 40-150mm telephoto - 80-300mm equivalent)

Quote from James Warner on June 26, 2022, 2:32 amThat 17.5-45 is interesting, I have not heard of that one before. I wonder how it compares to the very similar looking 14-45. You'll have to let me know.
Right now I am shooting the E-300 (beat up one I bought on ebay and cleaned up). I'm experimenting with a 4/3 to M42 mount adapter and my many random M42 lenses. So far so good, and I'm liking the results. I'll post more later next week when I get the chance to play with it some more.
I'm glad you're liking the E-500. I think these Olympus DSLRs are really neat and the whole system is cool if you can get a hold of some of the harder to find lenses.

The 17.5-45 (equivalent to 35-90mm) is one of the cheapest 4/3 lenses, it's quite light in comparison to the 14-45 and is built way cheaper however it does have a much better minimum focusing distance at 0.28m compared to the 14-45's 0.38m, it also has less barrel distortion at the wide end
Biofos (a great site for info on 4/3 lenses and cameras) has a great comparison of the 17.5-45, 14-45 and the high end 14-54 biofos.com: Zuiko Digital standard lens comparison

I've currently got my eye on the 25mm pancake lens which would also be handy on my E-420 body

Quote from Lim on June 26, 2022, 11:28 amI have a decent collection of four thirds lenses whilst I do own and like the 25mm pancake it's not optically better than 25mm on the 14-54 2.8-3.5. It only has the advantage of size. However, I would recommend it as it does make the bodies a lot more compact.
If you want a better zoom lens the 14-54 2.8-3.5 is quite affordable, around £90 considering it is quite bright as well.
I'd recommend looking at WEX (as you are in the UK) as well as they are one of the few proper camera retailers who still carry four thirds' lenses. The prices are generally on par with Ebay. I got the 50mm F2 macro from them.

Quote from Bart Kerste on June 26, 2022, 7:37 pmI once started with Olympus and now I'm completely returning to the system. I currently own the E300, E330, E500, E620 and the E30. I mainly use the 35mm macro (70mm) and the 18-180 lens (unexpectedly good image quality). I had to get used to the fact that the E500 does not have image stabilization. I always edit my images after, but with Olympus, very little is needed. All photos were taken with the 18-180 lens and the E500
